The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has taken decisive steps against admission racketeering in the institution, directing disciplinary measures against a staff member accused of fraudulent practices.

Mr. Nnaji Kenneth, an employee in the Personnel Unit (Statistics) of the Registry Department, allegedly collected ₦400,000 from the mother of a prospective student with the promise of securing admission into the Faculty of Medicine. The arrangement was later altered to Nursing Science.

Trouble started when Kenneth reportedly stopped answering the woman’s calls, prompting her to petition the Acting Vice-Chancellor directly. The case was brought to light through a statement issued on Saturday by the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Louis Njelita.

According to the statement, Kenneth admitted to the allegation in the presence of the institution’s Chief Safety Officer, Chief Legal Officer, and Public Relations Officer. The matter has since been referred to the university’s disciplinary committee for further action.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi reiterated that admission into the university is free, warning staff and the public against fraudulent dealings.

The university described the move as a bold step towards cleansing the system of corruption and expressed hope that it would deter others from engaging in similar practices
