FG Announces Nationwide Public Holiday for May 1, 2026 to Celebrate Workers 🇳🇬

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of this year’s International Workers’ Day, a day set aside globally to recognize and celebrate the contributions of workers to national growth and development.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who spoke on behalf of the Federal Government. In his message, he extended warm congratulations to Nigerian workers across all sectors, applauding their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to nation-building despite prevailing economic and social challenges.

According to an official statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister acknowledged the critical role workers play in driving Nigeria’s economy forward. He emphasized that the productivity, discipline, and sacrifices of Nigerian workers remain the backbone of the country’s progress and prosperity.

The Minister further highlighted that Workers’ Day is not just a time for celebration, but also a moment for reflection. He urged workers to continually uphold the core values of patriotism, diligence, integrity, and professionalism in their various fields. He noted that these values are essential in building a stronger, more united, and economically stable nation.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the welfare of workers, Tunji-Ojo stated that efforts are ongoing to improve working conditions, enhance job security, and create more opportunities for sustainable employment across the country. He also assured Nigerians that the government remains focused on implementing policies that will foster economic growth, attract investments, and ultimately improve the standard of living for all citizens.

In addition, the Minister called on Nigerians to use the public holiday as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of unity, cooperation, and hard work in national development. He encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and remain peaceful, law-abiding, and respectful of one another during the holiday period.

International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated annually on May 1st in many countries around the world. It serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of workers, as well as the ongoing need to promote fair labour practices, workers’ rights, and improved working conditions.

In Nigeria, the day is often marked by parades, rallies, and events organized by labour unions and professional bodies, where workers come together to celebrate their contributions and advocate for better welfare packages and policies.

As the nation prepares to observe this important day, the Federal Government’s declaration of a public holiday underscores its recognition of the vital role workers play in shaping the future of Nigeria.
