OAU STUDENTS PROTEST TRANSPORT CRISIS, SHUT DOWN LECTURES ON CAMPUS
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been thrown into tension as students staged a protest over the ongoing transportation crisis affecting movement within the campus.
According to reports, students expressed frustration over the inadequate availability of campus shuttle buses and the sudden hike in transport fares by private operators. Many students complained that the situation has made it difficult to attend lectures on time, especially for those residing far from their faculties and lecture halls.
In response to the situation, aggrieved students blocked major roads within the campus, preventing both vehicular movement and academic activities. As a result, lectures across several faculties were disrupted, forcing many lecturers to suspend classes indefinitely.
Some students also took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction, calling on the university management to urgently intervene and provide a lasting solution to the transport challenges. They emphasized that the current situation is not only affecting their academic performance but also putting unnecessary financial strain on them.
Efforts by school authorities and security personnel to calm the situation were reportedly ongoing at the time of filing this report. However, students insist that protests may continue if concrete actions are not taken immediately.
The university management is yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but stakeholders are hopeful that a resolution will be reached soon to restore normal academic activities.
