The Federal Government has announced that candidates seeking admission into Federal Colleges of Education across Nigeria will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, made this known during the 2026 Policy Meeting organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Abuja on Monday.

According to the minister, the new policy is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to expand access to tertiary education and encourage more students to enroll in colleges of education and technical institutions nationwide.

Dr. Alausa explained that the adjustment will also affect applicants seeking admission into programmes related to technology, agriculture, and other vocational disciplines in tertiary institutions. He noted that the decision is aimed at promoting practical education, reducing barriers to admission, and boosting enrollment in critical sectors needed for national development.

The development is expected to bring relief to many candidates who face challenges with the UTME process annually. Education stakeholders believe the policy could also help revive interest in teacher education and technical training across the country.

The announcement formed part of key resolutions discussed during the 2026 JAMB Policy Meeting, where major admission guidelines and reforms for the new academic session were reviewed.

Candidates and parents are advised to stay updated as more details concerning admission procedures and implementation guidelines are expected to be released by the relevant authorities in the coming weeks.
