The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured stakeholders and candidates of its readiness for the successful conduct of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) slated for 2026.

Addressing reporters in Lagos on Wednesday during the council’s sensitisation campaign on the CB-WASSCE, Head of the WAEC National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said the council had put in place all necessary measures to ensure a smooth and credible examination process.

The sensitisation exercise, which was simultaneously held at WAEC’s national offices in Yaba, Ojo, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Maryland, and Surulere, was aimed at preparing candidates and schools for the transition to the computer-based mode of examination.

Dangut explained that every candidate who registers for the 2026 CB-WASSCE would be able to write the examination seamlessly, whether in Nigeria or abroad. He emphasised that the move to computer-based testing is part of WAEC’s broader effort to enhance the credibility, timeliness, and integrity of its examinations.

“Some people are still doubting whether this CB-WASSCE is a reality or not. Even though we have conducted five examinations using this mode, every candidate who registers for CB-WASSCE 2026 will write their examination—whether offshore or onshore. CB-WASSCE is the future of examinations,” he said.

The WAEC boss noted that the full deployment of computer-based testing would drastically reduce examination malpractice and logistical challenges while improving the overall performance of candidates.

He further dismissed rumours that WAEC had removed some subjects from its Continuous Assessment (CASS) portal, clarifying that the council only took off trade subjects that had been officially discontinued by the government.

“For example, auto merchandising has been removed because it no longer exists as a recognised subject. Leaving it in the CASS portal serves no purpose,” Dangut said.

He added that while the names of some subjects had been modified, their core content remained the same.

“WAEC is responsible, law-abiding, and committed to advancing technology in education. We are ready to position Nigeria among nations that fully embrace computer technology for effective learning and assessment,” he stated.

The council assured candidates, parents, and schools that all identified concerns would be addressed before the commencement of the 2026 CB-WASSCE.
