The Ogun State Government has announced a major policy aimed at reducing the financial burden placed on parents and guardians by schools. In a directive issued through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, all public and private schools across the state have been ordered to discontinue graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties for non-exit classes.

According to the circular dated June 17, 2026, the government expressed concern over reports that some schools were allegedly imposing excessive charges on parents under the guise of organizing graduation ceremonies and end-of-session celebrations. The ministry described the trend as unacceptable and contrary to the state's commitment to affordable and quality education.

The directive, signed by the Director of Education (Private Schools), A.A. Bisiriyu, emphasized that schools must immediately halt the organization of such events and ensure strict compliance with the government's position. School administrators have also been instructed to inform parents, teachers, and relevant stakeholders about the new policy.

However, the government clarified that graduation ceremonies will still be permitted for recognized exit classes only. These include Primary Six pupils, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3) students, and Senior Secondary School Three (SS3) students. The decision is intended to preserve the significance of graduation while discouraging unnecessary celebrations at every academic level.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that frequent graduation ceremonies and elaborate end-of-session parties have become increasingly expensive for many families. The government believes that restricting such events to exit classes will help reduce financial pressure on parents while maintaining the integrity of the educational system.

The Ogun State Government further warned that any school found violating the directive will face appropriate sanctions in line with existing regulations. This development places Ogun among several states that have taken steps to regulate extravagant school celebrations and promote more affordable educational practices.

Parents, guardians, and school proprietors are therefore advised to take note of the directive and ensure full compliance as the state continues its efforts to strengthen discipline, accountability, and affordability within the education sector.
